DOWNTOWN ALBANY’S SCULPTURE IN THE STREETS CALL FOR ARTISTS
Temporary Public Sculpture Exhibition Returns to the Capital City

ALBANY, NY (April 30, 2007) – After a six-year hiatus, downtown Albany’s hugely successful temporary public art installation, Sculpture in the Streets, will be reincarnated this summer with a new focus on contemporary sculpture. The Downtown Albany Business Improvement District (BID) is currently soliciting applications from artists interested in participating in the exhibition. Complete information and a downloadable prospectus are available by visiting www.downtownalbany.org or by emailing Bruce McEwing, Director of Marketing, at bmcewing@downtownalbany.org. The deadline for applications is 5:00 PM on Tuesday, May 15.

The exhibition will be anchored by a series of new pieces by internationally-renowned local artist Don Gialanella and will feature 10-15 works from other local and regional sculptors at locations throughout downtown Albany’s business and entertainment corridors. Sculpture in the Streets is scheduled to begin in July 2007 and run through October.

The newest twist on this classic downtown event is the brainchild of presenting sponsor Kivort Steel of Waterford. “Kivort Steel has been an active part of the Capital Region for decades, and we wanted to do something special for the community as we approach our 70th anniversary,” said Robert Kivort, president of Kivort Steel. “We’ve worked with Don (Gialanella) for years, and his pieces grace collections around the country and around the world. We think his work is a perfect complement to Albany’s burgeoning arts scene and Sculpture in the Streets seemed like the perfect vehicle.”

Sculpture in the Streets is being produced by the Downtown Albany BID with project management assistance from Albany Center Gallery and its executive director Sarah Martinez, among others.
