St. Peter’s Episcopal Church I 107 State Street
The first bell in Albany to announce the passage of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 will ring once again this July 4.
The historic “Old Bell” of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, dating back to 1751, was first rung in July 1776 and continued to mark Independence Day for many years after. Following spring repairs, it will return for this year’s celebration.
St. Peter’s will ring the bell during a special Historic Morning Prayer Service at 9:00 AM on July 4. Using the 1662 English Prayer Book—the same style that would have been used in 1776—the service will feature period music, historic readings, and portions in Dutch and Mohawk in tribute to the multilingual congregation of the mid-1700s.
